Abstract
The reserves created in Iran by the Game and Fish Department (there are also some forest areas along the Caspian Sea designated as ‘National Parks’ and administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources) during the past decade are playing a vital role in the conservation of the country's fauna and flora. At present there are three ‘Wildlife Parks’ and 18 ‘Protected Regions’, with a total area aggregating 3,665,156 hectares, and representing virtually every biotic community in Iran. The legal history governing the formation and maintenance of this system is discussed. Geographic boundaries and the location of each reserve are illustrated, and their primary habitats, size, date of establishment, and future status, are listed. Representative Protected Regions and the three Wildlife Parks are described.
